The Symposium on Competence Anchor DESY-FAU-HZG took place on 29–30 May 2017 at the Institute for Crystallography and Structural Physics in Erlangen.

P. Wasserscheid started the symposium by presenting the upcoming excellence strategy of the Competence Anchor, and E. Weckert presented the DESY Photon science strategy. Afterwards, the scientific status and future perspectives of the “Specific Target Research Projects” (STREPs) were presented and discussed between all the partners.

T. Unruh replaced C. Brabec to present new results about in-situ detection of metastable microstructures, F. Bertram spoke about surface scattering possibilities at the high resolution diffraction beamline in DESY, H.-P Steinrück presented the in-situ studies of surface and interface reactions in his group, J. Libuda presented the model studies of new liquid organic hydrogen carriers, and presented A. Stierle‘s talk about Operando Investigation of Model Catalysts for Hydrogen Storage due to his absence.

In the next day, W. Peukert presented the recent advances on the Particle formation dynamics in his group, F. Galgon (AG. Körner) spoke about nano-precipitates in Additive Manufacturing Materials and P. Staron presented the latest results about the in-situ experiments for studying the selective laser melting process using high-energy X-rays.

After the break, a discussion session took place which collected the feedbacks of different partners and discussed the strategies to support the Competence Anchor integration into a National Excellence Strategy or the Program-Oriented Funding of the Helmholtz Association.
