3rd CENEM Summer School for X-ray Scattering 2017
The 3rd CENEM Summer School for X-ray Scattering 2017 took place on 24–27 July 2017 at the Institute for Crystallography and Structural Physics in Erlangen. The Summer School was sponsored by Anton Paar and introduced a variety of X-ray scattering techniques, their possibilities and advantages and hands-on training.
The participants came from various research fields, including materials science, physics, chemistry and biology. They were mainly interested to learn more about implementing the presented methods for their own studies.
This year, 30 participants have joined the school including two external participants from Mateis-INSA, Lyon (France) and Adolphe Merkle Institute, Fribourg (Switzerland) joined the school.
After the welcome talk, the school with a lecture for R. Hock about powder diffraction (XRD), followed by a lecture for T. Unruh about the small angle x-rays scattering (SAXS). After the break, a lecture about x-rays reflectometry (XRR) was presented by J. Will, followed by another lecture about Grazing Incidence Scattering (GISAXS, GIWAXS) by M. Berlinghof and an X-rays safety introduction by M. Weisser.
The 2nd day, R. Hock gave two other lectures about data analysis of powder diffractograms and full pattern profile fitting and R. Neder gave a pair distribution function analysis (PDF)
The 3rd day, T. Unruh gave two other lectures about small angle scattering, advanced applications, instrumentation and data analysis. Afterwards, O. Seeck (DESY, Hamburg) gave a lecture about X-ray scattering techniques at synchrotron radiation sources.
The last day, J. Will gave lecture about x-rays reflectometry for studies of layered systems and M. Berlinghof/ W. Gruber shared a lecture about GISAXS/GIWAXS for studying thin films.
In the afternoons, the participants were divided in 4 groups of 4-5 participants to attend the hands-on trainings in cycle, which covered 4 different topics (SAXS, GISAXS, XRR and XRD).
At the end of the school, a barbecue meeting took place at the campus, giving the participants the opportunity to discuss several topics with the members of the chair and to plan future cooperation between each other.
The 4th CENEM Summer School for X-ray Scattering 2017 is planned to take place at the end of July 2017.
